8 Spring Trends To Thrift Now

Spring is coming!

Time to put away the winter coats and dive into spring fashion. And there is so so much for us to dive in to! In fact, after reading, watching and observing trends from the runway to the streets, I can almost say that I have seen every color, every pattern and every silhouette. Which, on one hand is great. If you know what suits you and you are happy, keep it up. If you want to step up your game and try some trends, these are the trends I saw rise to the top, appearing in many different designers’ shows and already showing up in the streets. The BEST news? These are totally thriftable styles! Let’s get started with a little inspo from the runway...

Tie Dye

I know, I know, this one seems hard to swallow in Vermont. Wearing a tie dye t-shirt doesn’t really make a statement here. So, glam it up. Wear a tie-dye dress, sweater, dress pants or blouse. Wear it in lux fabrics, like silk. Wear monochromatic colors or neutrals. You can also layer and mix your tie-dye pieces to strengthen the statement. Or if you want a simple update to your tie-dye tee, knot it at your natural waist with a high waisted pant or maxi skirt.

Crochet

I love full length crochet dresses. The are such a fun, new take on boho chic. For smaller doses, look for crochet tanks. Knit and crochet cover ups have been popular for a few years. If you have one, try wearing it with jeans and a cotton tank. Chloe and Claudia Li used crochet belts as the signature pieces in their SS19 collections. I bet there are people out there that could easily make dupes. DIY project anyone?

Fringe

The fringe trend is still going strong. Bags, jackets, the hem of a pair of pants. If you have some fringe pieces in your wardrobe, keep rocking them. If you don’t, hit the second hand stores. Good ones can be hard to find, but they are out there. Or buy a quality fringe item in leather. Check in with your local leather workers. I don’t see this trend going away anytime soon.

Small Utility Bags/Waist Bags/Sling Bags

This is the trend that is changing the scene. Smaller utility bags, worn slung across your hips or chest are being worn by both men and women. Yes, we are talking fanny packs. But, they are also reimagining the whole concept of “hands free” bags. Fendi has bags that have multiple small bags across the belt. Many designers are making sling bags that are worn like sashes. I was just in Venice Beach thrift store, and I found a black leather vintage waist bag (fanny pack). I went through a storm of emotions holding it. I remembered my mother wearing a fanny pack in the early 90’s pushing my grandpa in a wheelchair. Instead of cringing, I felt nostalgia and love. I thought about how it would actually compliment my body shape. Then, I rapidly fell in love with not having to hold a purse on my shoulder while traveling. Guess who wore her vintage fanny pack for the whole rest of her trip? This girl. If you hate it. Don’t wear one. But I LOVE that sucker. This trend is so practical, I would really encourage you to suspend your judgement on it.

Interesting Necklines

Cut outs, ruffles, turtlenecks, lace, asymmetrical, anything that adds interest at the neckline is trending right now. Maybe it is the new cold shoulder? Although I think it is has more staying power because it is widely interpreted. Besides, who can hate a trend that really just showcases your beautiful face.

Strong Shoulders

I am not going to say those two dirty words (starts with shoulder and ends with pads), but look out for designs that accentuate the shoulders. Strong shoulders are here.

Tied Up Shirts

Take a great button up shirt and tie it for a more relaxed look. It also highlights your waist. Not much to say here. There is no need to run out and buy a bunch of pre-tied shirts.

Denim Trends

All things denim are still going strong. This spring, vintage jeans with this magical combo are hot: straight leg + medium wash + high waisted + a high cotton content. If you find them in your size, buy them. High rise bell bottoms are starting to sneak in the scene too. These might be tricky to find. The 2000’s versions have super low rises. I haven’t seen any high rise bell bottoms in thrift stores. You may have better luck in vintage shops. Oversized denim jackets are also trending. Don’t forget to check the men’s section.

I have so many more trends to discuss, so keep an eye on my blog. I am currently drafting posts on trends for the workplace, teens and men.

Have fun thrifting!

Love, Lisa
