8 Fall Trends To Thrift Now

Fall is here and the cooler weather has us all thinking about our wardrobes. What are we going to want to wear this fall? Is the pumpkin spice/apple picking/plaid look still a thing? How do we up our game while still keeping cozy and warm this season? What are we wearing to work now that we are back in the office?

All very valid questions.

Here is what I am seeing out there for REAL fall fashion. These are the looks that I think most of us would enjoy wearing, might already have in our closets or could easily thrift. Or, as I like to say Easy to wear, Easy on the wallet and Easy on the earth.

First, here is a bit of inspiration from some street style stars. Peruse their general vibe and we will discuss reality after.

Saturated Colors

You may have noticed that earth tones, like rust, browns and mustard yellows have been popular for the last couple of years. Typically, this color palette is reserved for the fall. But, since we have worn it through winter, spring and summer, we are ready for some pops of color this season! Enter the super saturated trend. These are not neon or pastels. They are intense, pure colors that love to be worn head to toe or paired with other saturated colors. However, if you are not ready for that much of a statement, they also pair well with neutrals like black, khaki or a denim.

Tonal/Monochromatic Dressing

The most popular way to wear this head-to-toe color look is in suiting. This is a trend that has been with us for awhile. I wrote about it in my post about Spring Trends back in 2019. If you are not a suit wearing person, try wearing pieces in the same color but in varying intensity. For example, a green top with bright green bag or a blue blouse with brighter, more intense blue trousers. We are also seeing a resurgence of wearing all black, which is great for those of us with mostly black wardrobes.

Chunky Knits

You asked about the apple picking look, well here it is. In the form of chunky, oversized knits. Cable knits are especially coveted right now. Knits are popular in all colors, but an off-white fisherman style sweater is classic and a great longer term investment in your wardrobe. If you love this look, now is the time to find vests, coatigans (coat/cardigan hybrids), dresses and even lounge pants. Knits are everywhere and are easy to score second hand.

Oversize Button Downs

If you like comfort, the oversize button down trend is for you. Men’s shirts work great for this look. Wear them half tucked to show your waist or open with a tank. As it gets cooler transition to fleece lined button downs aka Shackets. In my opinion this is one of the most fall friendly trends out there. So cozy and practical.

Tailored Vests and Trousers

We are starting to see a nod to more business formal dressing, but in very comfortable and easy to wear ways. Tailored vests, which can be extremely flattering are being spotted worn alone or layered with tees and jackets. Loose trousers are often paired with the vests, but these flowy, comfortable bottoms are also paired with sweaters, tees and more. Bonus: Wear base layers under your loose trousers to keep warm.

Fringe

Fringe has stayed with us folks. Fringe bags, fringe jackets, I am even seeing more fringe in blouses and pieces like plaid coats. This trend has been around for awhile and I don’t see it ending any time soon. Which means second hand scoreability is high!

Headscarves

I love headscarves, so this trend makes me happy. Whether your style is boho, retro, French girl or even Lizzie McGuire, there is a headscarf option for you. I prefer silk scarves, which can be a bit harder to find and more pricey, but they are worth it.

Y2K

Notice how I mentioned Lizzie McGuire? Well, early 2000s style is back. For those of us who feel like we just lived through this and are not ready, I hear you. However, be prepared for baby doll tees, low rise pants and skirts, flared jeans, trucker hats, Fendi baguette style bags, ribbed button-up cardigans, mini skirts and velour track suits. Personally, there are not many here I want to revisit. I will leave them for my teen daughters, but I do like a good trucker cap and I already have two pairs of flared jeans in my closet.

So what do you think? Any fall trends you love? Hate? Already wearing? Let us know in the comments!

Love, Lisa
