7 Lazy Ways to Have More Style
Looking your best can be a lot of work. Heck, when the weather is bad and you are rushed for time, looking halfway decent is a lot of work. I am here to tell you that sometimes being a bit lazy is actually more stylish. Here are seven ways for you to slack off today.
Wash your clothes LESS.
Do yourself and the earth a favor and stop washing your jeans every time you wear them. If they don’t smell and are not visibly dirty put them back in your closet. They will actually look better the next time you wear them and they will last longer. This also goes for most shirts and sweaters, especially if they are natural fabrics (linen, silk, cotton, wool). Give them the “sniff and look” test and hang them back up if they pass. The key is to give them a little room to breathe, so make sure you space on in your closet. And, don’t forget the magic of spot cleaning. One little stain may not require a full washing!
I don’t believe there are any hard and fast rules about how often you should wash something (except for underwear, please wash those everyday!) but if you would like some guidance, here are a couple of articles

Repeat your clothes with pride.
We all suffer from decision fatigue. What to wear, what to make for dinner, what paint color to choose. Constantly trying to make the best choice in the most creative way in every area of our lives is exhausting. Limit your decisions my having some go-to looks and don’t be afraid to repeat your outfits. Ariana Huffington makes a point of wearing the same dress to events and encourages others to do the same. #repeats
If you would rather be a little more low key about your repeats, this article from shefinds.com has some good tips on how to rewear outfits.
Still having trouble with repeating your outfits? Your wardrobe may need a wardrobe edit.
Find your signature look.
A bold lip, sunglasses, a color, a statement jacket, whatever you feel represents you the best, can be the easiest way to look great every day. I admit this “lazy” tip is the hardest, but it is the most rewarding. If you do the work to find out what look is right for you, you will never fall for trends that do not work for you. And, I promise, every day after finding your signature look will be much lazier.
Here is a deep dive into signature style from author Anuschka Rees. You may find that you already have a signature look and you just need to embrace it. Ask your friends, “if I was a cartoon character what would I be wearing?” The response may surprise you. If you need more help, consider contacting me about a Style and Shape Consultation.
Perfect is overrated.
The fastest way to look out of place in Vermont is to look perfectly put together. Now, I am not saying this is a bad thing. I love and truly appreciate everyone who puts in the effort. However, most of us do not want this pressure or attention, so allow yourself to relax and play with your wardrobe. For example, your bag and shoes do not have to be the same shade of brown. In fact, they do not have to match at all. You can wear a mix of silver and gold. Some of the most interesting outfits are created when people allow themselves to play. However, if you want to be safe and not look like a hot mess, always “consider your story.” What look are you creating? Sporty, elegant, business appropriate, bohemian? Play in these lines and you will find it much easier to succeed.
One trend at a time.
Head to toe trendy clothing is a lot of work. Not every piece in your wardrobe needs to be of the hottest new style. In fact, unless you are a teenager, I would strongly advise against it. Looking stylish and relevant is much easier when you take one trendy piece and mix it with the classic pieces in your wardrobe. For example, if you love your new studded booties, wear them with a classic sweater and simple pair of jeans. Don’t make it harder than it has to be. Erin Busbee of Busbee Style does this well.
The minimalist jewelry trend.
I know I just said to wear one trend at a time, but this one doesn’t feel like a trend to me. It is perfect for Vermont style and I don’t see it going anywhere any time soon. Simple, dainty, barely-there jewelry is SO easy. Wear it every day and it will instantly make you look more stylish with almost no effort. If you don’t already own some simple jewelry, Etsy always has some nice minimalist styles.
Shop the mannequins.
If you need a new look, don’t start from scratch. Look at the mannequins in the stores, see what the models are wearing in the images online. A stylist put that together. Use their expertise. There is help out there for you. If you are still not finding what you are looking for or feel lost, I am happy to help you shop.
