The First Post

You know what is the worst?* Having to sum up your life and dreams in a blog post. I refuse. I straight-up won’t do it. However, every blog must have the dreaded first post and this, my friends, is it.

So, someone suggested to me that I should sit down and write for 30 minutes, revise for 15 and then just hit post. She is nuts**, but also a professional life coach, so I listen.

I love Vermont. I am such a Vermonter, I challenge you to be more of a Vermonter than me. If you are, we are probably related. (Hey cuz!) The one thing*** I struggle with in Vermont is fashion. Vermont is not fashion friendly. The weather, the lack of shopping, the general forced relaxed vibe all make “dressing up” super awkward. Because of this people tend to think that fashion does not exist in Vermont. There is even a NYTimes article about it. This is BS. Total BS. I have traveled pretty extensively and I find Vermont to have some of the strictest, most uptight fashion rules. Basically, we have created a culture in which we strive to look athletic, healthy, glowing and gorgeous, while wearing slightly unkempt, lived-in styles that are in the latest colors and cuts. When you witness it (or stalk it, like I have my whole life) it feels like you are always missing the memo. How do these people look so good, so effortlessly? The answer: They put a lot of effort into their appearance and they spend way more money than any one of them will admit.

So, what are we doing to ourselves Vermont? How do we feel about all of this pretending? It seems a little shame based to me. (Yes, I am a fangirl of Brene Brown.) It also smacks of sexism. I have spent almost 40 years of my life being ashamed of my love of fashion and I am pretty tired of it. How about you?

If nothing else, I hope this blog opens up discussions around fashion for Vermonters. I have had many great experiences that I would love to share and I have a background in wardrobe styling that I hope is helpful. I will never be an instagram star that spends many hours getting a perfect photo or someone who videos herself twice a week about the latest styles or, perish the thought, walks around in perfectly curated, unique outfits every single day. I can’t do it. But, I am someone who is almost always thinking about the design and art of fashion, so I am up for all the discussions. And, for the first time, I am starting to feel comfortable to really share my voice.****

*Ok, I realize that this is not actually even close to the worst thing a person has to do. But, I live a blessed life and on my to do list of starting this business, this is a tough one for me. I struggle with putting myself out there. We all have our journeys.

**She is not nuts. Her name is Megan Pow and she is actually pretty amazing. But, when she says stuff like that, she hits my all my buttons and I feel like calling her names.

*** Also, feeling cold 9 months out of the year. I also struggle with that.

****Well, I already failed. This first write took 40 minutes. Glad to get the first of many mistakes over with.

Love, Lisa
